So I have been wanting to get a field recorder for a while but I just have to find the right one for me. So here’s my question. I want to get a field recorder with a good mic. What field recorder mic duo do you think is the best. If there are any ones on the lower budget side that still get you good audio that you have used and like please let me know. Anyway any feedback would be awesome!

Depends on what your looking to record.
There is a discussion on the the Tascam DR-40 and the Zoom H4n here:
http://filmpunch.org/forums/topic/tascam-dr-40-vs-h4n-zoom/

Both of those have XLR inputs for connecting an external mic.

On the lower end is the Zoom H1. It doesn’t have XLR inputs but is still a great little recorder for the price.

Quality is going to be pretty close on most of these types of Audio recorders, so the microphone is probably going to be the make or break point of your audio set up.

Are you looking to do more indoor or outdoor shooting?
A Shotgun is generally a decent solution for most environments, but typically you have to be a little more careful with shotgun microphones indoors.
